I went to my friend Jason’s place, to record a radio show with him. He’s heading out of town to play some East Coast shows with his band, so we had to time travel a week into the future to make it happen. It was easier than I expected.
The weather was very clear today, and Boise patios were jam packed with merry makers. Boiseans love their patios. I don’t disagree. I like seeing fellowship in action. Tomorrow we will be back in storm territory. Everything for a reason.
Read Ecclesiastes today, because it seems to fit into a longer piece I’m writing for my Substack. I love the language in the Old and New Testament. It informs so much literature, I like it because of the themes that have occupied thinkers for centuries. I am not a believer, although I was brought up in a Catholic adjacent household. And I don’t subscribe to that “I’m spiritual, not religious!” nonsense that wishy-washy people use to throw the hounds off the trail, as valid as that trope is for them. I am on a quest to make sense of the world, and as futile as it is, it occupies my time.

“Ecclesiastes 9”

“Take Life as It Comes 1 ALL this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God; whether it is love or hate one does not know. Everything that confronts them 2 is vanity, [29] since the same fate comes to all, to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, [30] to the clean and the unclean, to those who sacrifice and those who do not sacrifice. As are the good, so are the sinners; those who swear are like those who shun an oath. 3 This is an evil in all that happens under the sun, that the same fate comes to everyone. Moreover, the hearts of all are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead. 4 But whoever is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5 The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no more reward, and even the memory of them is lost. 6 Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished; never again will they have any share in all that happens under the sun.”

Back to work tomorrow, the beginning of a 12 day stretch. I’m getting kind of old for this, but it’s the only week of the year this happens, so I will do my best. Stay hydrated, get my rest. Tomorrow night, Prism Bitch at the Shrine, Saturday Curtis Stigers at the record store. My entries here may become erratic.
To everything there is a season.
