We were on a mountain road when the crew van got stuck. We had discharged the battery by leaving the radio playing while we worked clearing vegetation on the side of the road. When the supervisor tried to use the two way radio to get assistance, there was not enough power to make it work. We had a handheld radio (commonly known as a “walkie-talkie”) that did have power, but the button you pressed shorted out periodically, making it extremely unreliable. We tried repeatedly to get a signal out, but the hand held didn’t work. At all.
We were stuck.
We considered walking out, but we were about 7 miles from the county road. I asked to see the handheld, and the crew chief handed it to me.
I looked at it, started keying the switch, and for some reason it worked. I handed it back to the supervisor.
It didn’t work.
He handed it back to me.
It worked.
I handed it back to him.
It didn’t work.
He handed it back to me.
It worked.
So, instead of trying to do it himself, he had me key the mic, and hold it up to his face so he could talk to base.
We successfully contacted another crew who were working on the other side of the hill, and they came over and jump started the van.
We made up some story about why we got in that pickle.
And when we got to base, we turned in the hand held, which never worked again.
Strange, right?
One of my gifts is having electricity that is complimentary to devices.
I know people that have the opposite effect, and can’t wear watches because their lightning kills devices.
There is much to the world that is hidden from us.
Go with the flows.
